Human-Computer Interaction (SIT22008)
HCI quotes
“The big art of design is to make complicated things simple.” - Tim Parsey “Good design, when it’s done well, becomes invisible. It’s only when it’s done poorly that we notice it. Think of it like a room’s air conditioning. We only notice it when it’s too hot, too cold, making too much noise, or the unit is dripping on us. Yet, if the air conditioning is perfect, nobody say anything and we focus, instead, on the task at hand.” - Jared Spool
5. Education & Work
Think of how you learn, how you study, and how you work. Reading a book, watch videos, listening to an online lecture through your laptop or mobile phone, doing a team project, talking in KakoTalk for discussion, … all the activities related to education and work are conducted via any type of INTERACTIONs. Everyone learns knowledge or technique from a certain way of interaction. In the past, knowledge transfer was made by people-to-people interaction. Today, various computer technologies support people to learn and work so that modern people can treat a lot of information and knowledge quickly in their daily life. But, HCI is a different story. If someone is learning inefficiently, then that could be an HCI-related problem probably. HCI should help people learn efficiently, effectively, and satisfactorily.
Let’s see what kind of interactive technologies can support people learn and work efficiently and smartly. Especially, think of ‘how to learn on-line & off-line blended situations’ under COVID-19 and UNTACT trend, as well as ‘how to work’.
Try to keep thinking the detailed (= decomposited) interactions between humans and computers in education & work.

A. Emerging Education Techs & HCI
Education is one of the typical INTERACTIVE activities as people learn by people or learn by teaching materials (books, video clips, …). Therefore, the quality interaction can maximize the quality of learning. Do you agree? Then, what should be considered in our education to make it better? What can we contribute as an HCI expert in education?
- History of technology in education (Past, Presence, and Future)
- Robots in Education
- Interactive touch wall for both fun and education (based on projection mapping)
- PlayDoDo, Interactive media wall (based on touch sensor, conductive ink, projection mapping)
- Interactive book (based on projection mapping)
- River of Grass, Interactive museum at Miami
- SMART kapp iQ, a natural learning assistant
- How China Is Using Artificial Intelligence in Classrooms? (by Wall Street Journal)
- Picoo, Interactive game for indoor playgrounds
- Future interactions in education, a scenario by Corning
B. Smart Industry & Smart Works
More faster, more efficient, more effective, more secure, and more valuable.. Those are all that recent companies emphasize. To make our work more efficient and qualified, what HCI features can be helpful?
- Interactive touch technologies for collaboration
- Interactive Sports Data for Facebook
- VR/AR-assisted co-work or training
- Human-Robot interaction (HRI) and collaboration
- more videos about VR & HRI
- AI and the future of work
C. COVID-19 and Chellenges in Education and Work
COVID-19 definitely changes our lives, especially education and work, as those are the most major ‘out home’ activities in human life. Instead of going ‘out’, people should stay at home for their learning as well as their work. And people suddenly realized that no one is perfectly prepared to do their education and work while staying at home. How about you? How did you overcome the limitations? And what kind of HCI-related feature was helpful?
- Coronavirus outbreak puts online learning tech to the test
- Special education and COVID-19
- How to educate children during a pandemic? [COVID-19 Special]
- How working remotely will change more than work
